My dream to be an important person is coming to me clearly and clearly. I’m being chosen to speak on behalf of my whole coursemates to get the course accredited by Lembaga Akreditasi Negara. Well this wouldn’t happen if we’re in public U, like where I was before, but being in a private U, this is an honor. Well eventho I’m jest one among few others… I do feel honored. At least dapatlah tempias pahala if this course is being accredited for d next 5 years… who knows syamin could be one of those people I help.
Dat was wat yesterday’s meeting all about, meeting wit RMIT people sort of cancelled. Wutever it is, David n Arthur (lecturers from RMIT) will be visiting classes next week, as fresh semester 3 students, we’re all feeling like ‘beruk’, he he not to compare ourselves to dat dumb animal, but sumhow we’re like, yela outsider nak tengok kita belajar, funny kan? They’ll be questioning us, ctiricizing, huuu can’t wait. Dunno if I’m gonna like em but if I dun, I will suffer when I’m in aussie, they’re gonna be my lecturers!! Urghh…
I went to see James Lee’s talk and showreel yesterday @ d hall of fame. Well, jest like typical indies, he’s very firm with his indies life. Can see d toughness dat indie life built in him. in case my readers are NOT a fan of independent film or dunno dat that industry actually exist in Malaysia, James Lee are among the very few independent film makers in Malaysia, well he’s one of d best there is, won so many awards already, after d ups n downs. I’m linking my blog to his production house. Among his portfolios are Siti’s Kumilikmu Video clip (ok, this is not independent film, it’s called ‘features’), Maxis commercial (d one Marina Mahathir’s in it) so… those are fine jobs aint it? One film that’s gonna screen this 7th April in GSC Midvalley is The Beautiful Washing Machine, which recently won an award in Bangkok.
One thingy about independent film makers ya, they’re so sensitive about regional activities, the ‘normal’ social life, the ‘normal’ scripts… ‘normal’ scenes… which FINAS hates so much. (uh-oh, am I gonna get sued with dat statement?) well it’s true, damn it. Sorry ya Malaysian big bucks film makers, I mean, who speaks “Oh… Jadi awaklah yang curik ayam tu ya?” or “Betul tu ****, kes-kes seperti ini semakin berleluasa dan kita perlu ambil tindakan segara bagi menangani masalah ini” in everyday conversations?? Tell me?? Nak kerat jari? Boleh… No Problem! sorryla ye mana tau ada je pengarah besar baca blog ni… but fact is fact. I’m not being a sarcastic here, or maybe I am, but it’s high time for Malaysians to be sensitive to this matter. We’re a well-civilised country but our films, our BOX-OFFICES couldn’t even be screened in our neighbouring countries! Maybe there are one or two like PGL, SePeT and few other, but too few! It’s box-office but only one race watches dat film, who wanna buy lah??
The normal, typical film-making scenario in Malaysia (or even d music industry) is dat we’re selling our actors n actresses. THAT’S A FACT. DO NOT DENY ME. Email me if u feel like doing so, I’ll jest delete my email or leave a comment in my tag board, well it will jest show that my message actually gets in your head. Selling faces??!! Lawa sangat ke to be intenational? Ok fine maybe not selling faces all d time, but when you sell actors and actresses, u’re actually actually selling their ‘act’. ACT?? The foul fact is darling audiences, there too few actors and actresses in Malaysia who can actually act, and those few are RARELY the ones picked up by these big bucks people (I didn’t say never, ok). Dats one main factor why we can’t sell our films outside and Malaysian Box-Offices can’t go far… I dunno how many will actually agree wit me… wutever. Or some of u guys might say, ’Hey, kutuk orang, u try to act la, see if u so good’ well people I did act, and I know I could act if I want to, I brought my school to victory during Drama Anti Dadah, we went all the way to Peringkat Negeri, and I was playing 2 rolls, not one. One roll as a devil who persuades a teenager to take drugs another rolls as his mother who later lost her son because of drugs. Two very different roll in one play and we got 1st place 3 times… what u guys wanna say? I know what, Alahai sekolah punya cerita… apa kelas? Hello!! At least I did and won awards, wat have u won? But people lemme tell u, selling actors n actresses can actually work, this is the very method used by Bollywood film industry. Tapi compare la lakonan diorang dengan kita beb… they take classes as early as 6 years old to become actors n actresses, u know. Not class, classes they’re serious about it. Or else tell me why Malaysian love Hrithik Roshan, Karisma Kapoor, SRK, Ajay Devgan, Kajol, Ranee Mukherjee etc so much?
But I think there’s actually a way to mend this. I wanna quote James Lee ya, “If we can’t sell the actors, sell the story and content”. Story and content… one problem. Malaysians are very fond of being typical Most of the box-offices we could’ve predicted what exactly will happen next. And it’s balik-balik cerita ituuuu jugak, macam takde plot lain kat Malaysia ni. Then storyline tak pernah nak consider regional audience, saper nak tengok? Melayu jelah yang tengok… Takyah citer panjang-panjang laa… I bet satu hapah mind-map pun tak buat in order to come out wit de storyline, research pun buat gitu-gitu je, asal ada. For this I really tabik Yasmin for SePet and Rabun and Tiara for PGL and Maybe M Nasir for Merah, and and movie where I got d ‘Eejay’ nickname, Selubung. in these films, tho ada juga typicality here n there, but it’s different in some ways. Kalau lari sangat dari typical karang, orang tanak tengok. They really portrayed ‘real’ scenes and ‘real’ scripts, but of course after big battle wit FINAS, especially SePeT. Other than her will be James Lee himself, Actor’s Studio people like Jit Murad, actors/resses like Ida Nerina, Harith, Afdlin to name but a few. I dunno lah Malaysian or lets jest blindly say Melayu sampai bila nak berada ditakuk lama?
